Welcome to Montanoa

Just below the world famous Monteverde Cloud Forest, sits our family farm which we have cared and transformed since 1997.

San Luis is the name of a community founded back in 1917 by our own family ancestors who migrated from the central valley searching for new lands. When we say cared and transformed, we mean receiving this property as an old grass cattle field with no trees, and transforming it into what it is today: a Sanctuary that is home to us, and wildlife such as insects, birds, animals, and of course, to the coffee trees!

Back in 1990, about 80% of the land in San Luis was owned by one single owner. On the other hand, many families were growing and had no land to build or work in. A kind-hearted Quaker community from the USA noticed this issue and bought a big piece of land and gifted it to 25 different families. We were blessed enough to be one of those lucky families! Not only do we feel extremely thankful, but responsible for doing what was promised back then: Keeping the land as a household and sustainably making a living from it.

William, our visionary dad, knew that winds had to be blocked somehow in order to plant trees. Ironically, this had to be done by planting trees. He planted “montanoa guatemalensis” trees surrounding the entire property and created blocks, or wind-protected sections, in between. The strong montanoa trees did their job well and grew for 15 years, as William watered them in dry season and cleared the weeds out in rainy season until we were finally able to start producing avocados, coffee, plantains, bananas, corn, oranges, limes and many other smaller crops.

Our sustainable practices

As a strong commitment to protecting our mother earth, we have adopted some sustainable practices in our family coffee farm:

No herbicides. Instead, we shop the weeds down manually and thus become organic nutrients for the soil.

No pesticides. In order to control pests, we use living organisms such as trichoderma, beauveria bassiana and metarhizium.

Pro-Tree production. By planting trees around and in between the coffee plants, we get to harvest different types of fruit, at the same time that the coffee plants get protected from wind, direct sunlight and get the nutrients from the fallen leaves. We believe that the more a forest like wholesome healthy environment.

Tour the farm and learn about the seed to cup process.

Come experience 2 hours of the real life on a Specialty coffee farm, no fakes, no lies. Get involved in which ever activity is happening during your visit, such as coffee harvesting, drying or fertilizing. End with a delightful coffee tasting or even a home made, locally sourced meal with our family.
